Green Party Councillor for Dundrum, Robert Jones, has welcomed the decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant planning permission for the Dundrum Central development on the site of the former Central Mental Hospital. The decision was confirmed to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Councillors by DLR Chief Executive Frank Curran on December 23rd.
The approval clears the way for 934 new homes, delivered in partnership between Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and the Land Development Agency, and represents a major step forward in addressing the housing crisis locally in the Dublin 14 area.
Once complete, the development will provide 753 affordable and cost-rental homes alongside 181 social homes, ensuring that a substantial majority of homes are genuinely accessible to people who want to live and work in the Dundrum area.
Councillor Jones said "the project also delivers important community and sustainability benefits, including a community centre with indoor sports facilities, a medical centre, retail units, a café, a crèche and a new public plaza, all located within a well-connected urban area close to public transport."
“Dundrum Central shows what good public-led development looks like: making smart use of underutilised land, delivering homes at scale, and building a compact, walkable community with services close to where people live,” he said.
Jones now hopes, subject to the statutory eight-week period for any legal challenges, the project team will proceed with plans to tender for the first phase of development early in 2026.
“This is the kind of housing delivery we need more of, affordable, sustainable and community-focused,” Councillor Jones added.
